Here comes Summer…

Today the sun shone and the Americans came.

Two cruise liners today and our little Guernsey high street is beginning to fill up. Thankfully we locals are adept at winding our way between map holders, photo takers and vague looking tour groups, in our panicked lunch hour rush.

I always resolve at this time of year to practice my direction giving skills, as we double up as an accessible and approachable tourist information. I fear on more than one occasion I have sent innocent tourists trotting merrily off in circles in search of the post office or Victor Hugo’s house – my old driving instructor will happily vouch for my left/right confusion…

Additionally, I also realise my French might be a little rusty as I happily chat away in my best accent Français, receiving nothing but blank stares from the poor Italian customers, whilst I try to gift wrap with the flair of the Continentals. And don’t even get me started on the bus routes…

Ah the perils of the tourist season! But you simply cannot beat that Summer feeling which only the visitors bring, (clearly you can’t always rely on the weather), with their enthusiasm and eccentricities and the happy hustle and bustle they bring to the town.

Happy days ahead!
